I am an independent writer and editor covering public health, the environment, technology, and media. My work has been published by The Atlantic, Assay, The Common, The Los Angeles Review of Books, Literary Hub, Harvard’s Nieman Reports, The New York Times, Orion, Scientific American, Slate, The Verge, and others.

I have been a grateful recipient of several Type Investigations grants, a Mirror Award, a Wellstone Center writing residency, a Logan Nonfiction Fellowship, among other honors. My stories are regularly taught in university classrooms and have been picked up by CNN, The LA Times, Longreads, NBC News Today, NPR’s On Point,  MediaShift, MTV, ThinkProgress, and others.

I also serve as an advisory board member of Appalachia Journal, and am the founding editor and publisher of Outdoors, the award-winning membership magazine of the Appalachian Mountain Club. I got my start reporting for a university newspaper and working the night shift as a stringer in a newsroom. I have an MFA from Vermont College of Fine Arts and a BA in French Literature from Boston College.

My latest projects explore why we’re so bad at preventing disaster before the fact of harm, and how we might do better. When I’m not writing, I’m likely exploring the woods nearby.

I am an independent writer and editor based in Boston and Vermont. I got my start reporting for a university newspaper, and in a newsroom, working the night shift as a stringer, and at an arts magazine, run by two incredible women founders. My writing, focused on public health, the environment, technology, and media, has been published by The Atlantic, Assay, The Common, The Los Angeles Review of Books, Literary Hub, Harvard’s Nieman Reports, The New York Times, Orion, Scientific American, Slate, The Verge, and others.

I have been a grateful recipient of several Type Investigations grants, a Mirror Award, a Wellstone Center writing residency, a Logan Nonfiction Fellowship, and others honors. My stories are regularly taught in university classrooms and cited by scholars and policymakers globally. They have been picked up by CNN, The LA Times, Longreads, NBC News Today, NPR’s On Point,  MediaShift, MTV, ThinkProgress, and others.

I am a graduate of Vermont College of Fine Arts with an MFA in creative nonfiction, an advisory board member of Appalachia Journal, and the founding editor and publisher of the Appalachian Mountain Club’s Outdoors Magazine.

My latest project explores why we’re so bad at preventing disaster before the fact of harm, and how we might do better. When I’m not writing, I’m probably walking the woods nearby.
